“We Learned So Much More Than Spanish: Our Experiences at Intercultura Costa Rica”
When we decided to travel to Costa Rica and join the immersion program at Intercultura, we had high expectations. But what we didn’t know was that we would come away with something far deeper than just the language. This is a collection of our personal, first-hand experiences, just as we lived them.
Rebecca Howes, Adult classes Spanish student in August 2023, group leader in 2025
“This program was absolutely excellent. It exceeded all my expectations. From the very first day, I felt welcome, cared for, and motivated to learn. The Tica host moms were wonderful. I had no trouble communicating with them, which greatly helped me improve my conversational Spanish. What impressed me the most was how well everything was organized: classes, cultural activities, and volunteer opportunities. I was able to live the language, not just study it. You’ve truly created an incredible program. A huge thank you to the entire Intercultura team!”
Cora, participant in the July 2024 Teen camp
“On the drive home, I spent four hours telling stories about the two weeks at Intercultura—and I ran out of energy before I ran out of things to say. I absolutely loved the camp. My teachers were incredible—warm and inspiring—and the group of students was amazing. I made friends from all over the world and shared experiences I’ll never forget. I’m so grateful for this opportunity. It wasn’t just a camp—it was a transformative experience that gave me confidence and joy.”
Cora’s Father, Teen Camp
“I think it takes a special kind of parent to send their child to a camp abroad. But we are so glad we did. This was an incredibly enriching experience for our daughter. Aside from the flights (which had nothing to do with Intercultura), everything went perfectly. The organization was flawless, communication was clear, and the experience was unforgettable.”
Mike Dugas & Family, all Intercultura students (visits in 2019 and 2020)
“Super program! My kids learned so much—even now, years later, they’re still using what they learned. Just today, I was reviewing verb conjugations with Patrick (age 8), and not only did he remember what he had learned, he asked me to teach him how to conjugate using ‘tú.’ We’re also reviewing the preterite, infinitive, and future tenses. Magnificent! Intercultura really planted a seed of curiosity and love for the language.”
Final Reflection, Intercultura Founding Director Laura Ellington
Each story we share is living proof of the real impact of immersive learning. At Intercultura, it’s not just grammar and vocabulary—you learn to communicate from the heart, to respect other cultures, and to grow as a person. If you’re considering an immersion program for yourself or your children, we encourage you to take that step. Learning a language in a beautiful setting, in a school that welcomes you like family, is priceless.
Learn the language. Live the culture. Transform your world.
