Intercultura Costa Rica is proud to announce that both our Heredia City Campus and our Sámara Beach Campus have received the Blue Flag Ecological Award (Bandera Azul Ecológica), recognizing our commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices. Although our campuses offer very different settings, ecological conservation is an important part of how we operate at both locations.
Sustainability at our campuses
Our Heredia campus is located in the heart of the city, while our Sámara campus is just steps from the Pacific Ocean. Both settings offer daily reminders of the importance of protecting Costa Rica’s natural environment. Our commitment includes investing in renewable energy, managing resources responsibly, and supporting initiatives that benefit the communities around us.
Some examples: Since 15 we have been using solar panels, first at our Sámara campus and from 2018 also at our Heredia campus, reducing our reliance on conventional electricity by close to 100%. At both campuses, we banned non-reusable plastics and eliminated photocopiers. In Sámara, our environmental efforts have also contributed to local initiatives improving waste collection, recycling, wastewater management, road safety, and education. In Heredia, students volunteer to maintain and improve facilities at local schools and kindergartens, as well as upkeep at a local wildlife rescue center. In Sámara, we volunteer and provide logistical support to the Coral Reef Protection Association; we volunteer with local Sustainable Development and Children’s Educational Associations;
Sustainability as part of the learning experience
As a Spanish immersion school, we believe that learning about Costa Rica includes understanding its environmental priorities and the role that local communities play in protecting their surroundings. Through their classes, homestays, and cultural activities, our students experience daily life in Costa Rica and gain a broader understanding of the country beyond the classroom. We hope that our approach to sustainability contributes to this experience, encouraging students and staff alike to think about how everyday choices can make a difference.
Continuing our commitment
Receiving the Blue Flag Ecological Award at both campuses is an important recognition of the work of our team and our ongoing efforts to operate responsibly. We congratulate everyone involved and look forward to continuing to strengthen our environmental practices at both locations.
